Default Mom needs a new computer

I know many of you guys are real tech/geeks/IT/computer people. My knowledge is limited. Mom 88 years young needs a new computer.

I'm looking at this one Dell Computer.

Mom uses AOhell for browsing/email/pogo games. It's what she's most familiar with and at 88 almost 89, if AOL is what she wants, AOL is what she will have.

I think this computer is more than adequate. She's not running in depth programs, no video, no picture storage, etc. What do you think?

Also she has an older monitor. Is there ever any issue with compatibility with older monitors/speakers, with the newer computers?

Anyone nearby have a flat screen they no longer use/want to sell? She doesn't have room for a large one...

I was also looking at a Dell (inspiron 560) which comes with a monitor. A little less computer 3 GB 640 GB Hard drive, intel dual core processor 3.0 ghz. A lot of this doesn't mean much to me.........

Lainey, have you thought about laptop/notebook instead of a desktop. I would say buy a laptop (portability and mobility always useful specially @ that age). you should be able to get similar spec laptop in the same price range as the desktop you mentioned above.

examples:

- HP G62-208 CA Notebook

- HP Pavilion DM31047cl Notebook

there are other brands too ...

One of my siblings mentioned it, but we think Mom is still happy with a desktop. Not ruling anything out just yet. Thanks for the input!
Good to meet you last night.

I don't think so.

She's content with the desktop.

I'd suggest that you try for the MicroSoft operating system supported into the future that looks/feels most like what your Mom is used to.

That is, pick one of the newer versions of Windows that works like what your Mom is accustomed to. When you're 88 years old, it's OK to let technology pass you by. You just need to keep the things you're doing now.

Ed!

Mom uses XP, but for the most part, works strictly from desktop, and icons. Any other clicking, clean up etc. set up, is done my my siblings and me. I think moving on to Windows 7 will work, though I can specify XP if the computer is purchased from Dell.

As to the AOL, I guess I can download the latest version? I have a disc of one of the earlier versions, not sure if it would work if the new computer has Windows 7. Anyone have .02 on that?
