Photogramaphy question...
So do you SLR folks have fancy flashes to go with 'em? I obviously didn't expect much from my D60 built-in flash, but it works better than I thought it would. However, being at the age where I frequent friend's weddings and new family member arrivals, a large portion of my picture taking is dedicated to indoor use.
Some of the flashes on the market, though, easily approach the cost of the camera, which I find a bit offputting for someone who isn't looking to be a pro.
What do you people have, or recommend? Ideally I'd like a little brighter, and aimable so I don't get redeye and dark shadows behind people.

i use a external top mounted flash on my dSLR and a "flip-it" reflector to bounce the light.

here is a decent example of bounce flash which will remove the red eye and the "harshness of direct flash"

is an inexpensive option with good reviews. an SB-600 is pricier but a nice flash.

I was at a big party the other day in a dark room and found I needed more light but I HATE using the built-in flash. I just never like the results - sooo harsh. What would be a good "budget" flash I can reflect off the ceiling or such if i were to carry just one in my small kit??

both allow the flash head to tilt upwards. I wouldn't recommend the sb-200 that was shown doesn't tilt so it's a direct flash and it will just wash out your subject and probably still give you the red eye effect
