I think there's a difference of terminology here... to me software engineers are "IT Professionals". However when people around the office generally refer to "IT", they mean the guys who manage the networks and server infrastructure all the way down to desktop support guys. Right now I perform support for a software product but I still consider myself as an IT Professional as I think that the scope is extremely broad to the point where.. if you're working in hardware, software or networking... you're an IT Professional, in which there are subsets of specialties like Software Engineers, Hardware Engineers, Support Engineers, Network Architects, etc...
IT = information technology.
so are game developers in IT? don't think so but their degree is in computer science.
I've designed network switches and data planes but I don't consider myself an IT guy.
I would not drag infrastructure designers into the IT umbrella either.
