Default radar detector not working properly?

I bought this off some guy for 320 and he said it was 3 months old. The guy doesn't look like a shady guy or anything. He lives with his wife and a really nice home. His around 50 something and he knew a lot about the radar too. When i tried it on my car for about 3 hours i didn't get alot of detection. I don't know how radars exactly work. Does the cop radar have to be on? I drove by some cops and state's where they park on the high way with their lights on for constuction working, nothing happened. And i thought it was really going to go off when i pass a cop that just pulled somebody over, nope nothing. This device was suppose to be at the same level as the passport 9500i. Can somebody please help me out? The gps was reset to default. One more thing does it detect from the rear? i was in my friends car to test it out and some cop was behind us and he flashed his lights just to get by and the radar didnt even go off. disappointed....

Depends, if it's instant-on radar you might drive by and nothing. From what I've noticed for non-laser radar, it's the small town cops in my area that keep it on all the time. So those you can see coming from pretty far away. My local cops don't do this at all. The staties are using laser.

If you want to test it to see if you're at least getting 24.x signals drive by a shopping plaza or one of those speed signs that shows your mph. They should trigger the device.

You have to understand how X-K-Laser band works.

X band radars operate on a wavelength of 2.5-4 cm and a frequency of 8-12 GHz.

K band radars operate on a wavelength of .75-1.2 cm or 1.7-2.5 cm and a corresponding frequency of 27-40 GHz and 12-18 GHz.

A police laser emits a highly focused beam of invisible light, in the near infrared region of light, that is centered at 904nm of wavelength and is only about 22 inches (56cm) in diameter at 1000 feet (300m).

For the your radar detector to cry, has to have input signal to respond. There are two to tango (Transmitter & Reciever). Any frequency I stated if transmitted & recieved by the detector, the unit will respond. Simple as that! The signal is nothing more than electromagnetic waves and convert them to electrical impulses.

You drove the cops and your expecting a buzz from your detector?
Not all cops carry a gun. Ask the bobby.
How do you know if the cops has a Radar? Come on man.

Detecting from behind is nothing more than detecting a frequency coming from the front. Just a matter of where the antenna best aligned. Similar to your Direct TV. A technician has to align the antenna pointing to the satellite to recieve a good reception.

Two things can be wronged with your radar detector. Either he sold you a bad one or the the Detector has a better false suppression.
Other than that, Cops has to have a radar turn on before your detector can respond.
You are looking for trouble huh?

i would rather have a cop detector than a radar detector also they could have laser and your bell would never signal

I have to admit that there have been at least a dozen times when i wish I had the arrows of the V1... but not for the price

Like I mentioned, you can generally test out your K band by driving towards the automatic doors at most retail stores (Target is a good example) as they operate in the 24.xxx Ghz range (from what I've seen). The beltronics has GPS and you can lock-out false positive hits which is nice. If the previous owner didn't lock out that location it should go off. Wish I had that, maybe it's time for an upgrade.
