I'll weigh in on the marriage thing... to me, it was all about knowing I was comfortable with her values. We both have similar values in life, and they guide our decisions similarly, so it helps when it comes to dealing with change/conflict/issues that we can work a good compromise or solution. Everyone says "communication" is always key, and it is true, despite being a rather vague statement. As long as you both "get" one another without having to work at every discussion, you'd be OK.
I've seen plenty of great couples that make it work fine with different values, so it's certainly not a requirement... just what makes it work for me.
