Run away Prius?
It appears the Toyota folks can't replicate the problem with the run away Prius that was in the news last week. Is this a hoax similar to the balloon boy?
The Prius owner isn't in the best financial state. Was this a way to make money or get a new car?
What do you think?
Toyota is expected to challenge a California driver's story of an out-of-control Prius at a press conference Monday afternoon in California.
A draft congressional memo obtained by CNN on Sunday outlines Toyota's case. The memo was written by congressional staffers present during a joint investigation of the incident by Toyota Motor Co. and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Stop the Prius!

I smelled a rat when I heard the story the first time. It made no sense.
I doubt that a Prius engine would be able to overcome a fully depressed brake pedal, traveling at 90MPH or at a standstill.

Of course, there still is the issue of 'unintended acceleration' in general... in that to my knowledge, nobody's ever proven it after the fact in any of the vehicles claimed. Toyota, Audi, whatever.
Toyota's reputation is in trouble, but honestly... I think the reputation was inflated to begin with. Sure, like most rumor and gossip, there's some basis for reality, but it's largely the sum total of public opinion amongst people that have no real understanding. I still don't know how their Drive By Wire system works, and I'm not about to speculate. But phrases like "I thought the car would flip" just shows that I don't trust his opinion either.
