is salt salt?
so at home depot - they have 50 pound bags of ice melt for $16.00
and then i saw Morton's salt for water softners for $6.00 for a 40 pound bag
is there any difference?
i think the ice melt said magnesium chloride and the water softner said Potassium Chloride Pellets
will they both do the same thing

Steve,
Mortons water softener salt is in big chunks about an inch across.
You wouldn't be able to spread it for sh**.
as opposed to standard rock salt which is ~1/4 inch or less.
The magnesium chloride has a much lower solublized melting point that sodium chloride which is standard salt.
usually the mortons stuff is a sodium chloride not a potassium chloride.
also note in the link you posted potassium chloride works like crap as an ice melt.
