Bad situation Steve. Sorry you have to deal with that.

I am still young but have some old HS friends who are still living at home with what I would like to call "teenage" jobs and not something one should be doing in their mid 20s. I fear similar times for them in the future

the more i think about it the more i feel i should just say the heck with him. He's a 41 year old man who has made these choices and feels what he is doing is ok and doesn't do anything at all to get himself out of it. why should i care? i have my own life now and my own responsibilities and you could be sure if i needed help he would not do the same for me (unlike everyone on this board)

he's not family - he was a close friend but we've drifted apart i really do not want to even be around this person anymore because he is just a waste of life. Talked to my Boss last night and he said the same thing as Bill

Steve, just follow the steps. Tell him he has to go and you would be happy to take him to detox. If you call some of the crisis lines, they can probably tell you where there are facilities near you. Some require payment and or insurance. Does your friend have any coverage? If not, maybe his family would pay for it if he agrees to go to detox.

Look around. You can find some that are run by charities. With the new health insurance law, I'm pretty sure there has to be a place to take him.

I say you allow to let your friend stay over, but during the night, you smother him with a pillow sort of like at the end of, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". Then... give me a call and we can dump him in the reservoir by my house. If anyone asks any questions, we'll just say Ben did it. I'm pretty sure you owe him this as a friend; I'd be disappointed if my friends wouldn't do the same for me.

Or then again, the rehab idea is pretty good too. It's a toss-up.
