Default Something loose in the cat

Hi guys,

I've got something metallic buzzing/bumping around inside my catalytic converter. I was able to hear it rattle a little when I was banging on it with my hand with the car up on jacks. Sounded metallic (but not sure). Any ideas/guesses as to what it could be? Can't be anything like a valve or something significant pushed through the engine because the car is running fine!

I thought maybe it was an O2 sensor tip, but I'm not throwing a CEL or anything...

I suppose I'll have to take the cat off to get this thing out, whatever it is. Maybe I should unscrew the sensor and have a look at it. I have to do something about it because I can hear noises when I drive (and my top is always down). Can't have the S sounding like crap!

Cat heat shields will often rattle. Check them out first. The honeycomb inside may have broken. If so, there is not much that can be done, except for replacing the cat. The old cat is worth something as scrap, due to the precious metals in it. I think I got $80 for the last one that I scrapped.

Take her up to Scotty Ballistic in NH if the honeycomb has come loose.......he might be able to weld you up a new housing for it. Though it might need to get scrapped. Not unheard of to have the cat come loose and start bouncing around.

Excellent idea, Jim. I'd like to go see Scott for a few other things anyway. Thanks for the thought.

Get it hollowed out or replace it with a test pipe with a Check engine light bung. So your CEL won't turn on.
