The storm
Well it's been an interesting night here in Southern NH.
I was awakened at about 3 a.m. by the sounds of snapping trees and no power.
Tried to go back to sleep but as the temperature continued to drop in the house
with no power to run the furnace and the almost constant sounds of trees breaking
all around me, it was freaking me out and I had to leave.
So by flashlight I packed up some clothes and my laptop and headed out. There
was one particularly loud tree branch that had snapped so I walked around the
house to see if it may have hit the house, luckily it hadn't. But as I was walking
around the house it seemed like they were breaking all around me...quite eerie
at 3:30 a.m. and all the trees around my house are bending from the weight of
the ice, rather precariously close.
I got in the car and headed out. Had to stop before I got out of my driveway to
remove one tree limb that was too big to drive over.
Once I got to the road, there were trees and limbs down everywhere. It felt like
I was driving an autocross track dodging and weaving around all the debris. It
was apparent that crews had been going through the neighborhood trying to at
least keep the roads clear...saw several signs where trees that had fallen in the
road had been cut and moved to the side. Some as big as 6-12 inches in diameter.
Surprisingly enough, the roads were only wet and it was raining quite hard, but
it was still freezing on the trees and power lines.
Took me about 3 miles of driving before I found an area with power.
As I continued down one of the main roads through town, I start to come up on
one of those wooden barricades they put in the road to block potholes and such.
As I got closer to it, my eyes were drawn to see what was in the road. Well I
didn't see anything so I continued forward and all of sudden something hits the
car....well that barricade was apparently there to let you know there was a
POWER LINE hanging over the road which you can't see in the pitch dark driving
1/2 asleep.
Had to go to 2 hotels before I found one with power.
So here it is, 5:30 a.m. and my residence for the next 2 days (or more) is
the Holiday Inn in Nashua.
Now that I'm not as wired as I was a couple hours ago, I think I'll try to sleep.
Hopefully when power is restored and I return home, the house is intact....as much
as I'm not a city person, living in a concrete jungle has its benefits...no trees to
potentially destroy your house.
The power of nature is amazing and scary sometimes...the rain falling sounds innocent
enough but to see what it can do to large trees and power lines when it freezes
on them and makes them snap like kindling is incredible.
I hope everyone makes it through this and that their houses or cars aren't damaged.
Can you tell I'm rambling and have had no sleep?
G'night all.

Well I am trapped at home with no power. Half mile either way on my road has trees down. Power lines in the road and one transformer. It is crazy and I have not even left my house. All this is from my uncle calling me trying to get to my house. He left his stuff here to go to Canada and now he can't get here. He just called again and said if I want to leave to go jump the fence to the high way and he will pick me up. LOL my bed is Still warm, I am not going anywhere ......

100% rain here and not a spec of ice, this warmed up a lot I guess as its now 42F! I was waiting for Sarah's pager to go off in the night since she is on call and responds to power lines being down and transformer spills.
No calls thankfully so the damage must be minimal in our area.

We have a ton of rain and ice here, driveway looks pretty flooded. there is ice on the trees, power lines etc. On TV right now the reports are 80000+ without power in my general area.
I can tell you it is pouring outside and some of it is freezing as it hits trees etc.
If the temp goes down just a degree or two it will get a whole lot worse. Right now just to my south is where its pretty bad.
I have power and a generator if power goes down here so my day wont be too bad.
Just a waitin and see game now, Mark and Scott it sounds like you guys got that lil bit lower temp which caused more icing in your areas.

Things stared icing up when I left work. I went out for a few. On the way home at 10pm the trees were touching the roof of my car. All the local new stations are off air. My mom called and the Boston station says there more coming
Sorry to hear about you folks with power outages and lots of downed trees. We made it through with only lots of heavy rain. One of the dogs had to go out at 5:30 so I've been awake a while, too.
Couple days ago, we had some serious wind ans a fully grown white birch was uprooted a block or two away and a big pine was snapped a couple feet from the ground in the other directions.
