Default Subaru's

with all this snow falling down and my passat having it's 100K woe's I've been thinking about trading it in for a Subaru. Problem is I don't know which one to get.
The WRX is out cause I just don't see myself in one.

What's the difference between the Forester, Legacy and Outback? I'm only interested in the ones with the detuned STi turbo engines. Which one of these has the highest mod potential?

Just curious. How much do you think your VW worth if you trade it in?

BTW, the Legacy is a sweet ride. It has vario-cam which is basically borrowed from Porche's engine.

It is a sweet ride, but it is pretty pricey though.

Legacy's are really nice and good cars as well. I'm not sure of the mod potential however. If I was you I'd definately dump the V.W.

That would be the Legacy GT. Nearly $30K at MSRP though...

If I had $30k to throw around for something that is just the snow, I'd pack up and leave.

Just curious, a little off the subject, any front wheel drive sedan's traction control actually prevents plowing and fishtailing? My VW passat's traction control sucks, it does nothing to both situations. I wonder if the traction control actually exists at all.

The best way to check if it is working is to accelerate heavily in a straight line from a dead stop and you should feel it kicking in, if you just sit there and spin then it is not working.

I can spin my tires all day long in the snow until my tires find some tractions. I believe my TCS only works up to 25mph. Anything faster than that, I am basically on my own.

It sucks!

When I was driving a little too fast on a highway exit.....understeer.....I had to let go the gas pedal to tuck in my front end. When I brake into a corner too hard, it oversteer........

Boy, my TCS sucks!

Plowing, Fishtailing It is called SLOW DOWN!

VW traction control only monitors the difference in wheel rotation between the drive wheels, but without regard to overall velocity. Since most (pretty sure) VWs have an open diff, you can get one wheel to spin a lot faster than the other.....VWs system applies brakes to the wheel that is spinning too fast realitive to the other wheel.......I've only noticed mine kick in in snow...and rarely at that.

the system you are describing is more along the lines of stability control......or some sort anti spin software.....much more complicated.

So ....Julius.....you want a sedan or a wagon...

The Forrester XT has 250hp I think...probably modable to 300, but we are talking about a a tall station wagon like vehicle...
