Subaru's
Julius, look at the Legacy GT limited. As Ben says, it is around 30K sticker. I don't know what you can get it for. It is not the same engine as the STi. It does have 250 hp and 250 ft lbs.
My son needs a replacement beater. How much for the Passat?

[QUOTE=The Hoth,Jan 26 2005, 03:53 PM] Next time, I will have someone standing next to my VW and I will floor it in snow and see if the brakes do slow down the spinning. From my butt dyno, I can only sense the wheels were spinning. I don't feel any electronic intervention at all.
So an open diff is like allowing the torque transfer to the wheel which has the most tractions?

with all this snow falling down and my passat having it's 100K woe's I've been thinking about trading it in for a Subaru. Problem is I don't know which one to get.
The WRX is out cause I just don't see myself in one.
What's the difference between the Forester, Legacy and Outback? I'm only interested in the ones with the detuned STi turbo engines. Which one of these has the highest mod potential?

I think the forester is borderline SUV -- big and boxy. The outback is a "ruggeddy" version of the legacy, as I recall, which is essentially the one in station-wagon trip. The legacy itself is available as wagon or sedan, as I recall.
I think the guys are right though about the leg GT being the only one with the STi engine. Nice car, but kinda pricey...
My wife's car is a 2004 Legacy wagon. The main difference between Outback and Legacy are appointment levels, with the Outback getting nicer touches. The LL Bean edition has a 6 cylinder boxer and the rest of the line has their 4. We tried out the Forester and it shares the same platform as the Impreza but had a more truck like feel. The wagon she has now has their 5 speed manual, the first of three that has a smooth, Honda like shift gate. The others were very notchy, especially if you weren't throwing the shifter at speed. The 2.2 she has can cruise all day at 80 mph with three full size adult males or a couple bikes and rides exceptionally smoothly.
Don't know about mods for it.

yeah the 9-2x is for sale in the states but if you're buying that you might as well get the wrx wagon for a couple grand less.
looking over the nasioc web site and i found out that the forester is based on the wrx so most of the STi parts fit! i.e. rear sway bar - arm links, etc... and that subaru is underrating their HP rating on the forester and its really around 250 just like the other two models. pls. 0-60 in 5.3 seconds... all for less than 27k.. tempting!!
