Default Thinking of converting from plastic to glass

Hi everyone! My rear plastic window cracked a couple of days ago

I contacted my insurance and it will be covered under my glass policy. Therefore I will only have a $100 deductible. When speaking to them they suggested I go to my local dealer to obtain an estimate because they could not find a shop that would replace the plastic window.
I went over to the Herhb Chambers over in Burlington MA. They quoted me either $780 to replace the plastic or $2650 to replace the whole top. They said they were not too sure that they could just replace the plastic. Of course i know that it is possible, but if my insurance and Honda is under the impression that the whole top might have to be replaced, I might as well go ahead and replace it with glass.
My question to you guys is, if anyone has gone through this before, and what local shops around Woburn MA (10miles from Boston) would you recommend to do a glass conversion for a reasonable price. If the price which im sure it will, is lower than that quoted by Honda, I don't see why my insurance company wouldn't agree to pay it.

Thank you!

Do you care if it's 100% OEM? If not then maybe you should look into getting a Robbins top. I can't remember who here had that done, but I believe they were happy with the top and it was probably sub-1,000 price point.

I really don't care if its OEM. I know Robbins tops go for about $600 so its almost a no brainer. I just need to know of a shop around that area that can and will retrofit glass and that will work with my insurance.

Thank you

PM "dlaio" (Joe) about the Robbins replacement. He did the work himself in the '00 S2000, which I then bought from him. He put in the non-heated glass window version. If you had a day to do the work yourself you could get an estimate from the dealer for an OEM repair, then buy a Robbins and do the swap yourself and pocket the $$.

I've had the car for over 3 years now, and I think the top is now 4 yrs old, and it's still in great shape. Until this winter, it lived outside, too. I hand wash it and put Formula 303 protectant on a couple times a summer, and it looks good as new.

The only people who ever guess it isn't OEM are the S2k folks that know the '00 and '01 came with plastic.

Sure, the window is smaller, but I think it looks classier than wrinkly plastic.

I've read several DIYs on it, however I don't have the time. Full time job and full time student leave me with no time for anything. I agree the grlass looks 1000 times better than plastic.

Where are you from? I can reccomend a great shop that can install the top for you if you dont want to do it yourself. They are fairly priced, not cheap but not expensive, but they do a perfect job everytime. I work at a VW dealer and they do all of our Beetle convertible tops, comes out perfect everytime.

I second that! Don't just do a plastic to glass swap. Get the whole top replaced. You will be much better off in the long run.

you can't just get the plastic swapped to glass. you have to do the whole top.

Im waiting for the appraiser to call me tomorrow and find out what they will be willing to do. I figured if i can get enough shops to tell them that the whole top needs to be replaced, then im hoping that they'll do it. But i guess ill find out tomorrow.

My question here was if anyone had gone through something similar to this before and if they knew of a local place that had done retofit swaps (plastic to glass).
