It was simply a matter of stuff rusting... after removing some of the bolts by hand, you would be amazed by how little rust it takes to seize things up tight. I'm considering getting their suspension setup as my S approaches 55k miles. Stock suspension is still responsive, but I can tell its not as tight as it was back when it was a wee one.

the trick is, tighten the bolt slightly before trying to back it out. I've avoided many a "seized" suspension bolt that way. It's a lot easier to do this trick with said 3' breaker bar.
