Now you see why we remain with our TV viewing/package.
They are thieves!

I think it has to do with the price of the box. Basically it's going to take them at least a year to recoupe the cost at the price they charge. Sometimes they break and they're not returned, etc so they have to get the money from somewhere.
You could always go without a box and if your TV has standard def and QAM tuners you'll at least be able to get all non-encrypted/coded stations (i.e. ABC/NBC/CBS/FOX/PBS) in HD for no additional charge.

A little over a year ago, my brother in law gave us a Hi-Def TiVo unit as a combination Christmas/wedding gift. We did not have an HDTV, and obviously didn' thave HD service. We didn't even have digital cable.
The reason? I have cable-ready TVs, and I didn't want to spend money to rent 4 boxes just to watch a service I'm already paying for.
But my wife didn't want to sell or find a way to return the gift... so I bought a used HDTV unit, and signed up for digital cable + HD service. The TiVo has a monthly fee as well, but at least I can do more with it than I can with the cable company's box.
But up 'til then, I was content with the 60-something channels of analog cable.

my older hd tv only has the standard tuner and i do get the basic package without the extra box but no high def channels in the bed room -
i think i'm going to return the extra box and just use the new tv for high def / dvr
the thing that gets me is that without the extra box i am unable to watch the services i actually pay for in a second room

But like a lot of people, I'm doing just that. 4 TVs, only one has digital cable and HD. The others are ~70 channels.
The reality of it is that Comcast is just like every other cable company. The only competition they have is from satellite, which isn't really a direct comparison due to different offerings and features. So they have little incentive to keep costs down. They basically tell you what you want, and how you want it. Love it or shove it.
