hey Bill,
as a lawyer do they instantly throw you out of the pool?

and Erick,
does this count as having served even though you got an exemption for length of trial?

This thread is sad. You should all want to do jury duty!
I read the article in today's paper about the trial that Erick would have been a juror for.

I think I'd want to pass on that trial too. My son served on a jury a few years ago, he enjoyed the experience. I've been called a few times, never got selected for a trial.

What does the law require an employer to do regarding payment of employees on jury duty? I had some paperwork given to me years ago, that listed the employer obligation at three days. If that is correct, I know what would happen to my paycheck if I had to serve for 12. The "payment" received from the courts, wouldn't quite pay the bills.

Not sure on the law but here's my story. This spring I sat on a jury for a 4 day trial. I received full pay from work and on top of that you get $50 a day from the state for each day you sit on the jury after 3.

So I got full pay, made $50 and got a week off from work. On top of that it was fun.

Maine gives you $10 a day and .15 cents a mile, when your self employed it doesnt add up. Sorry but no thanks.

Depending on where the court was I'm not sure the $50 would cover gas and lunch.

I think just showing up clears me for 3 years. Although, I'm not positive about that.

Lunch was free for us. But that was due to 3 days of deliberations. The 1 day in the court room was on us but who cares.

Yeah, you're clear. Once you show up, you have "served" even if you didn't get on a jury.

BUT, you could still be called to federal court, as the service to the local courts does not excuse you from jury duty at a federal level.

We get $40/day here, no $ for mileage.

Levi, does $40 of gas get you to the courthouse and back?
