were not talking about the actors, we're talking about the roles that they played =P
"Achilles" had and will have an existence outside of the movie that was recently filmed. He is at least a permanent historical concept.
"Maximus" has no existence outside of the film. The only concept of Maximus is that which was seen in the film "Gladiator". Indeed, Maximus IS personified by Russell Crowe because that was and will be the only presentation of the character "Maximus".
So in a sense a we are pitting a G-dlike mythical human being whose concept has spanned centuries of time, with a two hour movie concept. Further, I wonder if "Maximum" or anything like it existed in the Roman language ??
Crowe wouldn't have a chance to even raise his sword vs. a G-d.
