in NY there is no such thing as legal tint (aside from factory). The lighter it is the less likely you will get a ticket for it, but ive seen many tickets issued for people with 35% tint. Even 50% is known as the semi-legal tint but its still not legal.
The only legal tint is 70% or greater which would be pointless. Its basically invisible. The law says you must allow at least 70% light to be transmitted.

Shameless plug, if anyone wants 3M Window Film or Clear Sheild on Long Island, let me know!

Tints on an s2000 are illegal. The only window on an s2000 you can legally tint is the rear. You cannot tint the side/windshield in NY or NJ. So, no matter what you get, you are breaking the law, so get whatever you want, and dont worry about the law. (if you dont mind tickets)
Anything tint 80% and over is easy to spot (80% tint is almost nothing)....so cops will hassle you anyway. Dont bother with anything less than 35%, but Im a fan of 0% personally....makes it a biotch to park at night though.

On my last car I had 45%... i think.
It looked like a factory tint job, and I never heard anything from any cops.
Plus, the cops around my area have nothing to do, and just mess with young kids in their fast cars all day long.
I think you're safe with anything between 35% - 70% on the sides.
The back window you can't hardly tell it's tinted, unless you go 0% !

I guess i'm the only person that thinks really dark windows look like sh*t. I guess it was cool back in '95 while I was bumpin' 2pac out the system.
Back to your question....
At night with minor streetlight, you wont be able to see sh!t if you have 35% or darker. Without streetlight (like a lot of LI and NJ residential areas) I wouldnt do anything lower than 50%.

You can't have them in Jersey. The police will make you take them off right then and there.
