only thing i'd suggest is if it is your VERY first bike to start learning on, get a 300cc or lower.
Hoping straight on a 600cc bike theses days could have severe consequences, they're FAST!!

Take MSF course, look for a used bike to start on.. Ninja 250 or Kawasaki SV650(Vtwin) is a good starter bike
+ Dont forget your Gears.. invest on a Full gears..

Yeah the SV650 is a great bike to start with and an experienced rider can hustle through the corners on one quite well. I've been working for an MC dealer for the past 8 years so if you've got any questions feel free to pm me. I'd also recommend a supermoto, it's like the motorcycle equivalent of our cars. Not a whole lot on the straight aways but in the corners it's like a filet knife. My favorite ride when not in the S

Everyone is different. I never took a lesson. My friends dropped me off in Shea stadium parking lot and said .. GO! A year later I was counter steering my way through traffic on the GCP outrunning guys on 1000's with my 600. That was in my younger and much much stupider days lol. I seen big guys sitting on 600's going 35mph and saying "man I was going fast" and also seen a 5' chic ride a CBR900 like it was a toy. Go to a few dealers and sit on some bikes. I always hated the feel of Yamahas and Hondas (too thin and way too light) so I was a Kawi Ninja fan for a while till I got on a Gixxer. Thats just me. I am sure you will find your own preferance.
Find a bike that fits you best. If you can, take a class on a Honda Shadow or a cruiser. When I took my exam (in the rain btw) with one of those bikes .. I laughed my ass off of how easy those bikes are to ride. Doing figure 8's on a sport bike is not so easy when you are starting off. Hope this helps and good luck and most of all .. BE SAFE.

I took the Trama course and it was very good. You prob won't need a private leason, just pay very close attention and be carefull. fwiw I've heard that the msf course is better

Thanks for all the input fellas...I'm going to take a look at a few bikes and also the MSF course...Tramas is booked up this month so I have some time to think before registration in July
Also another thing....I just did some quick research but seems like the SV650 has 650CC's....isn't that more power than a 600 CC bike? lol im confused...

Tramas is an MSF School. If you look on the MSF website, the contact numbers for the LI locations are Tramas'.
Dave, SV650 is a vtwin so it's not as powerful as an inline4 600. Just about all motorcycles are fast and easy to hurt yourself on, even 80cc dirtbikes. Get a bike that's either very inexpensive and upgrade to another bike later (that's what I did and probably the better choice), or get a bike that you like and take it very slow while you learn. Take it very slow while you learn either way. My advice is to resist the temptation to beat the piss out of it untill you KNOW you can handle it and keep in mind at that point that you still can't handle it.
safe riding and good luck
