After people remove the tape, they simply leave it off, even if they don't use a hardtop in the summer months. I've seen it both ways and I think they both look fine. In terms of putting the tape back on, it can be very cheap or very expensive depending on how/what you use.
The OEM tape can be purchased/ordered from the dealer, but it comes in 3 pieces and they are like $50 a piece or something rediculous like that. It's thicker than regular vinyl sticker stuff. Of course you can always go to a sticker shop and get some white/black vinyl too. I'm sure it'll look exactly the same.

but hey, as much as a pita it is for me to get myself in one, as soon as i go i know its worth it
