I'd gut the airbox then.

You should try driving it around at least once with the cover off the airbox, performance issues aside, it does make some fun noises

I planned to get the K&N simply for the sound. Is that bad?
Not at all!

Nothing wrong with making it sound better.

My only point is small mods like this should not be seen as performance mods, because the amount of performance they add you could add the same amount by going on a diet and dropping 1 pound of weight.

Would I derive any benefit if I were to install a K&N air filter element in the S? Would the S sound louder
No change in sound with a K&N replacement filter, still using the OEM box.

What is there to gut?
There is one divider in the bottom that I think should stay because it helps to keep the big chunks (dead bugs) from getting sucked into the filter.
Are you saying cut down the height of the wall/divider?

If the S sounded a tiny bit louder with top down and there was no drop in performance, I'd wanna do it
This is the best way to change the sound of the car - Performance Exhaust.

The performance exhaust will be a project for another day Doug. I'd really love to hear the exhaust note of your S someday.

I have an AEM cold-air intake with some modification to it for heat soak purposes and water issues.

I chose the 2-piece design because now you have the liberty of adding the water bypass valve just in case you get caught in one of these NY freak storms like what we've been having as of late.

Another thing to consider, and crap if I don't have a photo to show you, but if you go this route, you will have to cut out some plastic from behind your bumper underneath the passenger-side headlight so you can fit the filter in place. I'm using a different filter than an AEM as a personal choice but the AEM filter works fine down there too.

But also, with the filter being lower to the ground and below the water drain holes that are placed on both forward sides of the engine bay, you'll have to fill these over. I just used some 3M tape and some boat sealant to keep the water from dripping down on the filter. I don't have any issues with water either so thats good.

Sound from it is nice and I don't expect much if any HP gain but it did free up some room in the engine compartment and now its so easy to change the oil plus free up some weight in the process.

Thats my 2 cents if it helps.
