Thanks for the story Dave. I know where you are talking about. That must have been an eye-opening ride as you were fighting for control and then ended up on the other side of the road.
As you suspect, tired is never a good thing. When I instruct at the track, every morning when I get into a student's car I always ask what they did the night before. Funny thing is they always think I'm making small talk to get the day rolling, little do they know when I hear things like "well I was at the bar until late having a few beers with..." that they are going to be given less freedom on the track.

An important thing to do when the rear end is loose is to push the clutch in or modulate the gas so there's no acceleration going on in either direction. That lets the rear tires just hold the rear end up and may give you the traction you need.
I know well how this helps since I don't do it at an autocross when I get the rear loose. Lurid slides and spins result...
