Default Apple - Draconian Oppressor or Savior

The closest thing I've owned in regards to an Apple product was a used IPod i had for a year back in '03. I do know that alot of people worship the hallowed ground Jobs defecates on and am curious as to what people think of their apple products.

Food for thought

Ironic coming from a Brit.... LOL

But read the article; it seems he has more beef with their policies and business practice rather than the hardware itself, which is the reason most people switch.

I agree with some of his points though

however, i dont agree with alot of his points. and apple and att have a right to have exclusive rights for the iphone. RIM did the same thing with the Storm, Palm did the same thing with the Pre; etc. and iphones hold more value than most smartphones that come out besides blackberries. that guy jsut spends too much on his gadgets. and i thought i was bad. shit i get a new smartphone every 2-3 months. about 5-6 a year. and spend probably around 500 each. only the iphone makes me most of my money back when i sell it.

and there are many more examples of antiturst and monopoly issues in the US besides apple.

And Zune's software doesnt work with other mp3 players either. and you can use any mp3 player with MAC OS X just not with itunes. big deal.

the best thing about apple is their customer service and hardware quality. Microsoft and most of the PC manufacturers have horrible reputations for build quality and customer service.

IMO Apple is operating with the perfect balance right now. Anyone can get an SDK and develop an app yet having the filter of the iTunes store keeps spam and virus apps from infecting the iPhone community. If every jackass was developing their own apps and distributing them however they wanted, iPhone would be virus-ridden and have all kinds of other problems. What they did with iTunes and the app store is truly sheer genius when you think about all the logistical aspects.
Same thing with their computers/hardware, there may not be a million different options for computer configurations, but that's because they've tested and insured that every aspect of every Mac operates without conflicting with other parts (there's no "oh sh!t I picked up the ATI Radeon video card and the Creative sound card and the two aren't working well on my Asus motherboard which is causing all kinds of conflicts in Windows").
Additionally, most things we know and take for granted about computing originated with Apple: GUI OS, CD-ROM, USB, FireWire, mouse, and on and on. Additionally they contributed to Blu-Ray winning the format war with HDDVD, plug-and-play, the new industry standard H.264 video codec and on and on.
Apple FTW.

huh ...? did I miss something? Apple has been running the SAME EXACT hardware as PCs for some time now. Aside from the fluff like a pretty white casing and glowing Mac logo .. its pretty much the same. Thats why Macs can run Windows. That may have been true many many years ago but not anymore. Oh wait .. maybe thier way over priced powersupply is only mac made.

The main reason people switch is the OS. It pretty much locks you out of doing anything so anytime your Mac starts to run like crap you take it in to a Mac store and get raped.

Referring to the article, I am saying the guy doesn't seem to dislike the product themselves, rather the policies themselves. By hardware, I meant it to be synonymous with the products themselves, i.e. software+hardware. I wasn't talking about the specific hardware within a Macbook, iMac etc...

They do get less issues on the OS because Mac does have it locked down.
This is what most people care about.
