Hackers Find Way To Counterfeit Caller ID Display

When you see a familiar phone number pop up on your caller ID, you are more likely to pick up the phone. But what if the person calling you could change the number that you see on your caller ID?

E-mail spoofing has become a common problem. That is when an e-mail looks like it comes from a sender, but really comes from another. In so-called phishing scams, a spoofed mail appears to come from a legitimate company and asks you to confirm your account information, but it is actually coming from somebody who wants to steal your money, your identity or both.

Now there is a way to spoof your caller ID, which means you are no longer guaranteed that the caller is actually somebody you know.

Could this really pose that much risk? The only numbers that I recognise are my friends' and I'd certainly know if it wasn't them on the line. Or do you guys use a phone number to confirm that it really is your bank or credit card company before disclosing private info

The only advantage this would gain on me is that market survey ers would trick me into answering if I seen a friends number

 

This is happening here at my work, people have been calling here and claiming that we've been calling their cell phones like 6 to 7 times a day which is especially when I'm the only one at work and they call. I've been keeping a record of the people that call and their numbers, we're up 17 different people that have been hijacked
