I actually work with a guy that is completely consumed by this 2012 thing,he spends all his money(makes good money too) cause he thinks he'll have no use for any savings in a few years, and lives his life as if its will end on that date in 2012.
He is also a pro choice, racist, atheist that spends alotta of his free time downloading grotesque sexual pictures to his phone to show people.

he sounds fun to be around...

I have a cousin who is not only obsessed with this "2012" matter but tries to get others obsessed with it as well.
BTW, I find it funny that the guy's co-worker believes in the "2012-end-of-civilization" matter, but he's an Atheist...
Who does he think is going to destroy civilization?
Some people believe the Mayan's were in contact with extraterrestrial beings, which would explain their abrupt disappearance. Supposedly people in the 2012 crowd fear the aliens will come back on 2012.
In general terms, the Mayans simply believed the end of an "age" is coming on that date, based on their astrological calculations.

I think we will destroy ourselves due to the 2012 myth. I remember people freaking out over y2k, we were only talking about computers crashing (granted that could cause a large problem). There will be a war between believers and non believers. The non believers will be protecting them selves from all the crazy believers. I am looking forward to 2012, I am anxious to see what kind of crazy things people will think up. According to some translations from the book of all truth, the Bible, this shit is going to start many moons before the 21 of December.
If I am wrong, oh well, I'll be dead along with everyone else.

just coat your doors and windows in duct tape and tin foil then turn all your electrical appliances upside down and wrap them in plastic wrap. I promise if you follow these simple steps you will survive the 2012 doomsday with no issues.
The Mayan's described the end of the (a) world.
But to them, "world" did not mean the same as it does to us today; a world used to be an expression of a period of time, or in a way, a universe of time, rather than how we may view it today: planet, (multi?) universe, or personal phase (aka "Damn, it's like he's in his own world").
Using Mayan terminology, we might refer to the times of the great Roman Empire as a world, or the Middle Ages as a world, etc.
If anything, we should be pondering what this means for our capatalistic society, rather than if the planet is going to fall out from underneath us--of course, should I be wrong, we'll all be as equally dead, so bullocks.
