I have Dutch relatives, who live down in Utrecht, but still regularly make it up to Amsterdam, so I make it over there every few years. First off, the coffee shops aren't like the craze you might think they are over there; they're actually all filled with germans and tourists (such as yourself :-p).

Also, wasn't this topic brought up a few months ago? A few people recommended taking a tour of the Heineken factory, and of course you may like the red light district. If you're looking for crazy partying though, its not like you may think. Vegas is a better place to party and lose all your inhibitions than Amsterdam may be. The citizens still keep the city well-kept and clean, but also allow for everything you hear about. The Netherlands have always been open-minded like that.

my buddy lived near by for 6 years in the air force. 50 euro (about 75 bucks) gets you 30 minutes with a lady of your pick. lol.
He said they get checked onces a week and its posted on their door when the last check was. The closer you are to that date, the better.

My buddy was there last week to cap off his European adventure and said it's an interesting place. Despite all the talk of the red light district, the drug consumption, etc, his opinion was that it's a pretty normal place.

The stuff that they can do but we have laws against results in us being shocked by it, but over there it's just the norm and as a result people don't go overboard and do anything that ridiculous.

He also said that while there are some seriously smokin' hottie prostitutes around Amsterdam, they actually have standards and will turn down guys all day. Basically if you look at them and they don't give you a wink or smile or some positive indication, then you just keep on walking. Some will go so far as to wave their finger or shake their head at you if glace in their direction so you know to not even bother.

Been there done / smoked that. Start out at the BullDog (touristy) just to get a feel for how things work and then try some of the smaller shops.

Do not enter a coffee shop and just sit down and smoke, proper etiquette is to at least buy a drink or papers for the use of their property.

I'd go back in a heartbeat. We stopped there for 3 days on our way to a MotoGP race in Assen.

Watch out for bicycles, you are more likely to be run over by a bike than a car.
