Angels Hard At Work
Yesterday evening my daughter was driving for the first time since busting up the new Odyssey: her second accident in two months. We were driving the Civic to go grocery shopping. We went to Costco, then to Henry's, then to Trader Joe's, then to Ralph's, a total of about 20 miles.
As we were leaving Ralph's it had already gotten quite dark, and the right front wheel was making funny noises, as if it may have gotten a rock stuck in the tread or something. She pulled over to the side of the street and I got out to feel all around the tire: nothing. I decided to drive the rest of the way home. Another quarter mile and the noise returned. I went around the corner, left at the next light into an office building parking lot where there was a light.
When I got out to check the tire again I found that three of the lug nuts were missing, and one of the studs was broken off. I took one nut off each rear wheel to put on just to get us home--about three more miles--but when I tightened the one nut that had remained that stud broke, too!
We called a tow truck to take the car to the local dealer, only a couple of miles away.
On Saturday we had driven the Civic about one hundred fifty miles to the USC game and back, and to pick up and drop off my older son. Imagine if we had lost that wheel on the freeway.
Our angels were working overtime this weekend.
