Default another laptop question...

okay, the touchpad on my laptop has been acting weird for the longest time. after i rub my finger on it to move the mouse pointer and lift my finger, the mouse pointer moves backwards some. now this happens about 35% of the time, mostly while i'm using internet explorer. so my question is: is this attributed to a hardware problem or a software problem?? since my laptop is no longer under warranty, i don't want to order and buy a part to change out only to find out that it was not the problem, so i was wondering if there was a way to diagnose it to find out if it is a hardware or software problem...

Why don't you try and slow the speed of the pad mouse from the control panel window? I found that my tap was too sensitive and adjusted it from that window.

are you sure you dont mean the little touch-pointer thats located in the middle of the keys rather than the touch pad? ive had this happen with the touch pointer (little round thing also used to navigate the mouse) ... i would say its normal wear and tear. probably not worth fixing, get a mouse

^ no. i literally mean the touchpad. i already have a mini mouse, but i prefer to use the touch pad, cuz i have the habit of literally using my laptop on my lap, where using a mouse is, if not difficult and inconvient, nearly impossible. i also don't like having to plug and unplug a mouse when i take the laptop in and out of my case.

Try (re)installing Microsoft Intellipoint software at http://www.microsoft.com/hardware . It can occasionally fix problems like this. It loads a TSR program from your registry's startup key that allows for more options from buttons and scrollwheels on mice and gives you some more options to control your pointer (MS's generic term for mouse).
