Another street race leads to death...
Confiscating a vehicle for excessive speed is damn stupid. It doesn't stop anything, it doesn't change nothing and it sure doesn't make things better. Damn! This sux, lucky I don't live in Hawaii.

People have their licenses suspended for excessive speed in some countries, but does that stop them? Not necessarily, many will carry on driving even with a suspended license.
But if you take their cars away for a period of time, then yes, that should stop them, or at least make it harded for them to carry on driving. Especially if you take their license as well.
Would you let someone with a suspended license drive your car? I doubt it. So take away the car and the license, they should get the message in the end.
Well, the newspaper today stated that law makers are trying to pass a bill to make a first offense racing conviction 6 months mandatory jail sentence and confiscation of vehicle...
I don't think they should be giving stiffer penalties for racing than for DUI, things are getting out of hand IMO.

I don't know...
There's no mandatory jail sentence on a first offense for DUI. Don't you think that driving under the influence is just as bad, if not worse, than racing? Certainly, DUI is a much bigger problem than racing. People still do it. And I can guarantee that the majority of racers will still do it. Let's face it, the majority of street racers are young. The younger you are, the less you think of the consequences. I don't think that throwing them in jail for a 6 month stint on a FIRST offense is going to do any good. If a person doesn't learn from confiscation or impounding of his/her car on a first offense, than a second offense may warrant jail time, IMO.

Does that cover me from flames???I think high speed racing is blatantly stupid. I see a lot of cars racing and weaving in and out of traffic. Times like that I wish a had a police radio, as I would call it in! These people are endangering people's lives, the same goes for people who drink and drive.
The big problem I see is that these young kids are starting out driving in cars with way too much power. They just don't know the limits, and therefore they get stupid. For jail time, I would think that if you're engaged in a race going over 100 mph, I would really like to see jail time. Did you see the news the other night where these two guys were arrested for going over 100 mph? It's just plain out ridiculous. Especially in Hawaii were the roads are short, and there really isn't a good stretch of road that would be free of traffic and straight.
Not to get off on a rant here but....
Let's be realistic. The kids are not starting out with too much power. My parents grew up with V6 as a minimum, V8's common, and with big block's being very common. I grew up in the early 80's and 4 bangers were common, I was lucky to have a 302 with a couple of hundred horses but only because it was my Mom's hand me down 1970 Ford Fairlane. The problem isn't the amount of power, it's overpopulation and poor parenting. Even low powered cars can go 100 MPH. The kids have to properly taught how to drive. I don 't know about other states but in CA a couple of years ago they enacted restricted driving for teenagers and the initial studies have been very positive as far as the drop in accidents attributed to that age group. You're always going to have idiot drivers out there. Let's not overreact and penalize ANYONE who gets caught doing something stupid.
