They say 100mph impact, but the picture of the white van shows very little damage... my guess is that no one in that van was wearing seatbelts.

That was a very good deduction. However, the media in Hawaii is very biased IMO. They claim that the seat belts broke (?!). I doubt the seat belts were that weak. They even said on the headlines "TEACHER KILLED" , only to say the next day that she does clerical work and doesn't teach. Before anyone flames this comment, let me say that it doesn't lessen the tragedy one bit because she wasn't a teacher. I'm just trying to illustrate that the media here likes to put a slant on things which they shouldn't be. Just report the facts and let the public decide. Leave the opinions in the editorial section.

I'm totally against street racing but I'm also against bullshit propaganda too. I'm looking at this picture and reading the article and I'm sorry but I don't see the connection. The damage is all to the front end. The windshield is not broken and the passenger compartment is intact. If I had to judge from the photo I'd say the van rear-ended someone else. I must be missing something.

"The driver, 18-year-old Nicholas Tudisco of Hawaii Kai, was arrested for negligent homicide but released without being charged."

About says it all.

If the seatbelts had broken, you can be GUARANTEED that Ford would be paying for it.

I gotta agree. The damage on that van just doesn't seem to be enough for a 100mph crash. Still, the fact is, that guy shouldn't have been street racing. The bottom line is he ended up killing someone.

A couple of days ago, an NSX and a Corvette were racing. the two of them blew through a red light and the NSX T-boned a car. I don't think anyone in the car survived. The NSX driver went to the hospital. The NSX passenger jumped in the Corvette and they took off.

well, the story goes that the Prelude was traveling at least 100mph while he was racing, which caused him to lose control, spin out and after bleeding some speed, rear ending the van which in turn hit a barrier (which caused all of the front damage). There's talk of confiscating or impounding cars for excessive speeding here now (trying to pass the law). I think that would give too much power to the police, though I don't condone street racing.

You also have to take into consideration that the van was traveling at around 50 mph (that's the speed limit on that section of the freeway) so if the Prelude slowed to say 80 mph before the impact, the damage to the van is justifiable.
