Craftsman shop vacs. I just got one, 6 gallon with a 3hp motor....and that thing picked the carpet up of my floor. Getting rid of the dirt is also a snap. Great vacuum, and for 39.99, its awesome.

To buy it.

It comes with just the one pictured. However....

You can get (5.99 each) every attachment known to man.

Dust brush, crevice tool, car tool, etc.

Hose is pretty long, but a 20 footer is available if you want to hang it on the garage wall.

The Dyson Vacuums are nice, but....

Have reliability issues (my friend broke 2 already, although replaced under warranty, not as powerful, expensive as all hell)

If you spend like 150 bucks, you can get like a 12 gallon monster than can vacuum a garbage dump. The fact that it is a wet/dry is also nice. You can add a squeege attachment, and mop floors with it.!

Here is an even better one if you need to suck cement off the ground...

Comes with a lot of attachments and doodads.
(Also, these vacuums are POWERFUL blowers as well.) $109.99

Buy it

Ive used Dyson vacuums. They are good, but waaaaay overly complicated (if you know how a vacuum works....the internals of it.) Its just more stuff to break.

With vacuums, the simpler the better. The craftsman is very simple, and my 3 hp is a monster, I cant imagine the 6.5hp one....that can probably really suck a golfball through a hose.

Dyson vacuums are also INCREDIBLY expensive. THey are thin plastic, so can break easily, but the craftsman ones are tough as nails, they can be dropped, kicked, etc...and nothing.

Also, unlike the 3 times more expensive Dyson, the craftsman can blow, and suck AND pump out water to a different location at a very nice rate of speed.

This is my first craftman vacuum, Ive had bissel, hoover, eureka, etc, and nothing ever compared to this one. For the price especially, its an incredible vacuum.

Also, for shop/garage/automotive, nothing beats these wet/dry vacs.

There is, in my opinion, only one decent vacuum - Thermax. Every vacuum I know of puts dust and dirt back into the air when you vacuum. Basically, anything with a bag puts dirt back on the floor (or wherever you're vacuuming). The Thermax uses a submerged tube in a water tank to grab particulate. This thing is amazing. A Kirby has nothing on it. A Kirby does just fine until you vacuum a bit and get the filters clogged - then it loses significant suction. It also throws dirt back out the end when you vacuum.

The Thermax, having the suction set up differently, can actually play a harmonica with a cloth placed across the nozzle. It also functions as an air purifier and it can handle liquids and dirt/dust. It offers the option of carpet cleaning as well (not just vacuuming). Amazing.

Oh, it's also between $2K and $3K to buy. And it's not all that portable.
