It's better to set up your BIOS to power on automatically - it's simpler. I've heard a lot of people have problems getting Wake on LAN to work over a WAN.
Theres programs that will make the packet needed. Just need to configure it to pass through the router correctly.

Yeah that's what people are having problems with. Too many network components that could possibly fail vs. simple BIOS switch. Moot point anyway since it's not an option for the OP.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000AAAJG

It's called a Power Distribution Unit (PDU) and it looks a lot like a power bar with a network jack on it. You can telnet into the PDU and turn on and off each outlet individually or setup a phased power-on and off sequence to turn machines on and off in a particular order. For example, turning on everything all at once might create an initial surge which trips the breaker. Using a PDU one can turn on each port in sequence and on a schedule to allow your stuff to power up gracefully.

They are used a lot in data centers to control racks of equipment. You can probably find something cheaper or better suited somewhere else, perhaps on ebay?. This one is just one of the first that came up.

Here are other options, many in the < $100 range.

^^^ disregard above, those are unswitched units (ie powerbars without individual outlet control)

There is nothing switched < $100, Here is what you need:

It's the cheapest and smallest of the ones I found. Still, look at eBay for something used. People blow out servers and server equipment all the time. Once it's used for a couple of years it gets replaced and dropped on eBay.

Which is really surprising, because my mobo from my PC that I built in 1995 had it. My problem was I was running Linux and couldn't ever find the right drivers for my NIC to support it.

Stupid question. Why not just put the computer on sleep mode at night like I do?

A touch of a key or a wiggle of the mouse and it wakes right up. While sleep, the computer is completely silent.
