Any experts in cell phone services here?
Nothing serious, but a lot of knowledgeable folks here so thought I'd ask. My contract with T-Mobile is expiring very soon and I'm going to cancel. I'm going to open a family account under somebody else's name with T-Mobile. It'll be a new account. How long do I need to wait after the cancelation to open a new account in hope of getting back my old cell #? Is there a good chance I'll get my old number if I requested it? Remember, it'll be a new account but I'll try to request to get the same #. The new account will be under the spouse's name and we'll get some new free phones.
I don't know anything about losing the number when you cancel, but I was in a similar situation. I was a cingular user, and I was switching to a Verizon family plan that was already in use (the $9.99 for a new line deal). They would not let me transfer my number unless the account was under my name. So regardless, I think you will have trouble getting your number back.. not sure if this applies since youre using the same provider.
No need to cancel anything. If your contract runs out, you continue to pay and have service, you're just not locked in anymore.
Don't cancel your service, or you will lose your number. Go to t-Mobile and get the family plan, and tell them you want your number ported. They should handle the porting and cancel your old account with Verizon for you, or at least tell you when its okay to cancel the old plan.
Also, try and do this 5-6 business days before your billing period so you don't have to double pay with the old and new services.

The reason I'd like to cancel because my wife and I would like new phones since our old ones are kind of crappy. And the only way to get free phones is to open a new account. I wonder if they'll let me upgrade phones for free since I'm currently their customer. Plus, if we switch to a family plan, it'll be cheaper than having 2 separate accounts with 2 different companies.
Btw, this has nothing to do with Verizon, because I think some of you have misread.
Oh, thanks for the responses too!
