any Graphic Designers out there?
sounds cool, but i don't know if this is what i wanna do... some of the stuff i see people doing is amazing, i know i just started out w/ all this but i don't know if i'll be able to do all of that... i need to get illustrator and keep playing w/ it and see if i get the hang of it... did it come easy for most of you or did it require countless hours of messing around w/ the programs to get the hang of them?
p.s. 3fiddyz i really appreciate the offer, but i think i have to learn a lot more before i can get started... if you were serious

get some books and do as much reading and tutorials as you can for any program you want to learn. The more you play and work the faster you learn, books help get new direction and tips you may never have learned alone.

Maybe I should look up this PHP stuff.

One thing I'd suggest if you like doing the front end (UI) for sites, check out learning CSS. It's really cool that you can separate content from layout. Some stunning examples are here: http://www.csszengarden.com/ be sure to click on "other designs" which loads ONLY a new style sheet but uses the same content.
Also, another design software resource is http://www.lynda.com/ for $25/month you have access to several dozen video training programs.

I went to an art school in Pasadena, CA (Art Center College of Design)....although my major wasn't graphic design I had to work with alot of them. I majored in product/transportaiton/entertainment design, and let me tell you, it is a very, very, very tough field.
Out of all the majors there, the easiest to get a job and be successful is probably graphic design. I say stay in school and learn what you can. As Dark_Sub_Rosa mentioned, who you know is very, very important. I know it sucks, but its true....don't burn your bridges, don't piss people off because the creative design industry is small.
I was lucky in knowing the right people (my instructors) and became good friends, in turn they were the ones that helped me get my foot in the door.
Although I mostly majored in product/industrial design, I also enjoyed concept/entertainment design and thats what I'm doing now. Never did I ever think that I was going to be a concept designer for an Animation company, but be prepared to do things you weren't really expecting to happen.
Alot of my buddies majored in transportation design (designing cars, motorbikes etc...) quite a few of them are designing toys (my first job was lego), doing graphic design and etc... Regarding pay, I dunno....I was payed pretty well since the beginning and just keeps getting better. Stay in school and try get as much experience while your at school (interships, freebie jobs etc..just to get your name out there and to put down in your portfolio and resume). Good luck!

just have a small question since this is a graphics based thread.
Is adobe Illustrator hard to learn?
I want to move onto a different program and I am just wondering how hard it is to learn, compared to photoshop
I tried playing w/ some of the buttons from the demo I downloaded and am having a few problems getting used to the functions, they remind me of Flash (which i cant use). anyone willing to tell me a few pointers or anything?
I am teaching myself these programs basically
I want to learn Bryce next year..or maybe i'll skip illustrator hmm..
