Default Any metal heads?

Any metal heads here?

I just got Blind Guardian's new album and Immortal's new album. I know most people these days pimp R&B, but I can't wait to cruise in my S2000 with a decent sound system blasting some true metal.

My favorite bands are Bal-Sagoth and Absu.

I thought I was a metal head or liked certain kinds of metal... until I read this thread. I know of some speed metal bands and some older metal bands, but these... hmm, notta clue. =/

Well, I like Iron Maiden and such, but I'm way into the modern black/death scene.

Absu is a band that plays very technical, thrashy metal. Their lyrics are all influenced by sumerian and irish mythology.

Bal-Sagoth is a british fantasy metal band. Blind Guardian is a german fantasy metal band.

Immortal is from Norway I think. They are black metal, but their lyrics are all fantasy.

Another band I love is Iced Earth.

I suppose a good number of the metal bands I listen to aren't well known, but it's all good stuff

There might be a few new "metal" bands that I like. I like Opeth, but only when the guy sings in his human voice, not that growling deathmetal voice.

Other than that, it's all old school metal for me. From Iron Maiden to Death Angel, you name it.

I like other kinds of music too.

True Metal you ask???
One Word....

Metallica

If you listen to their old albums, they were so ahead of their time!! Rock today sounds like their stuff from a while ago like Godsmack, Disturbed, etc. with the only major difference in style being a little added rap and techno.

Metallica still kicks ass today, some of their stuff on the radio recently was nothing compared to the rest of the albums and I wish some of the other songs got airplay. Fuel, and King Nothing were good ones.

Other bands that kick ass metal wise back in the day and today.....

Pantera, Filter, Suicidal Tendencies, Ozzy, Tool, Rage Against the Machine, Disturbed, Godsmack, NIN, Static X, Deftones, White Zombie, Korn, Megadeath, help me out I may be forgetting a couple. (not all of these are true metal but have some mix)

Metallica? That was good for it's time, but today's metal ain't the stuff they play on the radio.

Venom was ahead of their time. Emperor was ahead of their time. Satyricon was ahead of their time. Mercyful Fate was ahead of their time. Each one redefined metal and created subgenres within subgenres.

Bathory redefined modern metal single handedly. Venom created black metal and gave it a name and Bathory made it what it is today.

I'm talking bands like Absu, Bal-Sagoth, Bloodhammer, Darkthrone, Emperor, Satyricon, Enthroned, Inquisition, Immortal, Sigh, Melechesh...ah such good stuff. And what about Nightwish (operatic metal), Blind Guardian (fantasy metal), Therion (epic operatic metal), and Candlemass (doom metal)?

The stuff they play on the radio ain't metal. It's hard rock.

You must mean Death Metal where all you here is that one voice going "ooooooooooooooo".
I am not sure where its defined but to me Hard Rock is ACDC, Judas Priest, Creed, Guns N Roses, etc.
Metallica, Disturbed, Drowning Pool, COC, Godsmack, etc is Heavy Metal.

No not death metal.

Absu never growls, King Diamond certainly doesn't (well, he's on the opposite end hehe with a lot of falsetto).

I do enjoy some death metal bands. My favorites are Nile, Immolation, Dismember, and Morbid Angel.

Black metal is anything from melodic to brutal. Operatic metal is choruses of female or male voices (or singular voices, like Nightwish) done in a highly stylistic fashion. Doom metal is characterized by bright vocals, droning guitar, and religious themes (which are more developed than in black metal).

Then you have the british metal movement which is general flavored black. They like a lot of organs and melodic elements mixed with sexually explicit lyrics

It's all good. Disturbed, Drowning Pool, COC, Godsmack, etc, are all bands I consider hard rock or radio metal and I don't particularly like them. But...having been into more obscure mythological metal bands like Absu for so long it's grown on me heavily.

I also dig Riot Grrl bands like Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney (although S/K has calmed down quite a bit) and the occaisional Henry Rollins or Frank Black.
