Default Any nailbiters here ever quit?

Since 3rd grade I have been biting my nails. How oh how do I ever stop?

Here are the two things that I feel are causing me to bite:

1) My innate need for perfection -- sometimes I bite in the hopes that I make my nail smoother but of course it backfires and the vicious cycle continues.

2) Stress -- once, for 2 whole weeks I was able to stop biting nails because I started taking nice deep breaths every time I felt like I needed to bite. Then I just got used to the deep breaths and started up again.

Anyone know how to overcome this nasty habit? Many thanks for any and all suggestions!

I used to bite my nails until I was about 15 and got braces on my teeth. That made it physically impossible and I never started again when they came off. You just need something to break the habit for a sufficiently long time.

IMO, nail bite is a not very good habit that I never had, it does help when stress through...

BTW, Steve, your video site is not really working now....just a reminder...

Ahem... cause I'm tired of certain people browsing through trying to find holes in my armor so to speak. All the individual videos work, but not the main listing.

So anyway back to my habit. I really like the idea of wearing a nailclipper on my keychain.... cause I use my other nails (what's left of them) to pick at my nails too, so painting something on the nails or wearing braces doesn't help in this case. Thanks Mr. Kim!

t_j, if only that were a solution hahaha

Have someone hit you upside the head anytime they see you biting them ... it worked for my friend, thanks to my wicked backhand. I knew all that highschool tennis would come in handy someday.

go to the store and get a nail file. get two while you are at it, they usually come in packs of two. put one in your car - the radio flip down cover is a great place to store one in your car. the other one, keep at your desk or with you. use it, file down, use it to occupy the time and to get the rough edges off so there's nothing to knaw onto. I've been trying to stop for years, but this has been working, when I stick to it.
