6 years is the maximum length you can hold an H1B. You can apply for a greencard while you have an H1B. No requirement to hold the H1B for X years before applying for green card.
My Sister is an immigration lawyer because they make it so hard to get legal here, plus any small law violation is blown out of proportion. It seems like the good ones find it hard to stay but you can't get rid of the bad ones.
