Default Anyone attending school at UC Riverside?

Even though i'm not an owner of an S2k...I like coming on this board more than 7thgencivic.com...haha I just wanted to see who attends UCR. My choices are UC riverside, UC Santa Cruz and Mt.Sac. yea i would save a lot of money going to Sac but i sorta dont wanna live at home. I visited the UC riverside campus on friday and it seemed OKAY, was really small, but the pentland dorms looked pretty cool. How do you guys/gals like it there on all aspects?(living there, academically, things to do, etc...) Since riverside is like on the lower scale of the UC system, people have been giving bad reviews of it even though they've never been there. I'm plannin on majoring either business management or comp sci. But i'm really interested in mech. engineering. Anyhow, thanks for any help.

School wise if its cool then thats good and if i go there for school and sleeping and its all good then i guess i'll head to riverside, but most of the time i dont think i'll be around the riverside area if i wanna look for some fun...

Yea, there really isn't that much to do here...I guess you gotta be in a frat to know what's going on.

You DO NOT want to live in the AI dorms, do whatever to NOT live at AI, or in a triple. In my opinion, dorms just plain out suck. Most of the people living in the dorms are a bunch of jerk offs, I don't now why. If I could start over, I'd find an apartment. I just got dicked over with a bunch of idiots in my dorm. Same thing happened with my friend at UCI.

UCR has a pretty good Engineering department. Definitely not bad, but not up there with the other UCs, such as Irvine, SD, Berkeley, LA. Business, I hear is also alright (my friend's a business major).

Entertainment:
There are a few hookah bars around here and strip clubs, so those are always relaxing.

I don't really know of any clubs around the area...there's on close to UCR (on university), but I heard it sucks.

I hear there's carting place around (fast go carts), but the well-known one is at Lake Perris, which is about 45 minutes away I believe. They have carts that go about 80 mph...I think you need a license though.

My friend who goes here loves it, but I personally do not. He goes snowboarding a lot and goes to the river. Riverside is pretty close to big bear, and a nearby river (forgot the name of).

Things to do for Free:
While living in the dorms, there are occasionally events that go on like trips to watch recordings of talk shows/sitcoms like "Craigh Kilborn", "The Best Damn Sports Show.", etc. Also, there are occasionally groups/bands that play here for free. If you're into hip hop, for welcome week Dialated Peoples played here for free, and Souls of Mischief are playing here soon, for free. UCR also shows movies sometimes on a huge screen outdoors for free., movies that are in theatres at the time.

There are always frat parties that are going on, so you can always check those out if you're really bored. I went to a bunch the first couple weeks, and they ALL sucked. It was pathetic.

I guess if you've got the time or on weekends, you can always hit up Los Angeles/Hollywood for fun, or hit up the beaches in Orange County. You can also go hiking, if you're into that kind of stuff.

Oh yea, the Ontario street races are close by, but you REALLY do not want to go to those...Trust me.

Personal note:

I really don't like this place - my first year is hell so far - and I'm gonna be going to a Junior College next year in Orange County (my hometown is Irvine). Don't get me wrong, this is just MY opinion, and a lot of other people like Riverside. But if I were you, I'd try to get into at least Irvine or SB. I think I've just met a lot of the wrong people, in the dorms that is, but that's common anywhere. I also think for comp sci, it's easier to find a job in Irvine, since there are just plain out more companies located there based on IT, software, hardware, etc. I believe the big companies out in Riverside are SAIC and Hewlett Packard.

You should also get some info from DJSang or Reverend. I'm sure they have much different views than I do. In my view, UCR is an alright school, but the surrounding area (riverside) is simply not much of a college town. Nothing that pertains to college seems to have really developed around UCR. Keep in mind that I've only been there for 2 quarters.

Thanks integrate. That is soo much of what i've been thinking it would be! I didnt see jack squat to do there...i didnt get into SB or Irvine but i'mma try to appeal to irvine. Irvine's comp sci is hard to get into, my friend got into their honors program and he had a way higher SAT and GPA than me. I saw those A-I dorms and they looked like jail cells...the pentland dont seem too bad but i'm afraid as you said i would find "jerk-offs" and dorks all around. I'm pretty much basically into girls, and fixing up imports...and i play b-ball and tennis occasionally, but i like to get out more. Do you know how much the Dorms are compared to the apartments in the surrouding area? I have a few friends who are gonna go there and they wanna get an apartment straight out. If i do go to riverside, besides going to school and sleeping, most likely i'mma be chillin in irvine with my hommies or over in LA kickin or somewhere. If i do end up in comp sci...i'm definitely not gonna hang out with the many dorks who are associated with that major Hope sang and reverend can help me out too. Thanks for the extensive info Integrate....if your views or anything changes by the end of the year then update me on it! Thanks. Bye!

Yea, I play ball too and really into my cars. I have met some cool guys who are also into cars...my friend here has a B20/VTEC setup in his EK hatch and I have another friend an Red '95 M3 with AC Shitzner rims.

Anyways, UCI's comp sci program has gotten much harder to get into, like a HUGE jump from last year...pretty ridiculous. Last year, people with MUCH lower scores than mine got into UCI's comp sci. I had a 1280 SAT I and 3.7 GPA weighted, and I didn't get in. Couldn't believe it. My friend at UCI has a 4.0 and basically top of his class in Comp Sci...real smart guy. Anyways, bunch of my friends who are doing comp sci at UCI (same year as me) went in undeclared and is gonna transfer to the school of comp sci. Moral of the story, I should've gone undeclared, because all my friends who went in undeclared got in, and they didn't have any better scores than I did. If your counselor told you to apply with a declared major, then he/she totally screwed you over. Highschool counselors are useless, literally.

Also, I have a few friends who are comp sci/engineering majors here, and they're cool. Two of them are really into cars - more than I am (used to have supercharged single cam SI) and my other comp eng. friend owns the b20/vtec hatch. A lot people who I've met are in comp sci are really cool guys, and not really dorks at all, but it's good to try to make friends with anyone you can..cuz when you need help...you know what I'm talkin about.

Also, apartments are WAY better than dorms. Just more freedom, more room, and more privacy. You don't have to deal with idiots everyday while you walk through the hall. If you do go to UCR, live in the apartments...it'll be way better (remember, in the apartments, you'll most likely have your own room, but not in the dorms). Either grand marc or stone henge (I think that's the name). The most expensive is probably Grand Marc, but you should call them up and ask cuz their prices vary depending on room size. For a 4 bedroom suite with 4 bathrooms, washer/dryer, kitchen, TV, ethernet, access to pool/spa, pool tables, small gym, lounging/studying area, it's $650 a month (ALL worth it). But there are some cheap apartments around the area.

I go to Irvine EVERY weekend to chill with friends...I never stay here.

btw, this girl's a comp engineer major just to show you there good looking girls in comp sci/eng.

LOL thats pretty cool...as long as there are decent females there! A few of my friends wanna find an apartment cause basically its pretty much cheaper than living in the dorms and if you're with friends thats the perfect set up cause you guys know each other already and everyone has their own space. 650$/month!?!?! Thats pretty good....for 4 bedroom and 4 bathrooms! Was that price for the grand marc? Well i'mma head back over to Riverside sometime during next week and my friend and i are gonna check out the apartments and surrounding areas. Hope i see some dope s2000s there so i can say whats up! Thanks for the info integrate!

DJSang and Reverend i need your input too!! thanks all

most likely i'mma do the same as you and be down at either irvine or LA chillin.
