Default Anyone exp in catalog making?

In the company I work for I'm in charge of making this fairly large catalog of 3000 items (Asian food products). I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what program I should use for this.

So far I am using Adobe PageMaker 6.5 but it blows hardcore because if I need to update the catalog, I have to manually move all the products around to fit in new products. I also have to manually position every picture and text too, and it doesn't have any search function to find a product (Which is useful when you are dealing with over 300 pages of items).

A friend suggested Corel Draw and I am about to try it out now, but I'd like more suggestions xD

Have you tried doing a Google search for catalog printing. There are templates that are basically plug and play. I couldn't imagine doing all the work from scratch.

I think I'm stuck doing all that work from scratch

I have to keep the catalog up to date so it has to be easy to maintain.
