Anyone know about consulting.....
I am going to college and I have a few questions for you,
First I am going into my 4th semester so I still have this semester on what to do for my major. I am currrently leaning towards business more specifically Economics.
Where should I attend college with a good program in both. I live in AZ and was wondering if ASU is worth going to or if I should look somewhere else such as USC or any other schools, I don't mind relocating but I would much rather stay in or around Cali if possible.
Any other degree programs that I should look at getting into for this career choice.
Would a degree in Econ help in this field or should I look more at a different degree in Business.
Thanks in advance.

Go to USC. According to the U.S. News and World Report annual ranking of 1,400 colleges, The Marshall School of Business ranks 12th in the nation. (THe University of Arizona is 23rd and ASU is 26th.) USC's accounting and entrepreneurship programs both rank in the top 5. UCLA also has an excellent B school.
You need to figure out what you want to do, then select a major. If you're really not sure, or figure your career will just evolve on its own, stay with a general major like finance or business economics -- or something related to computers. You will gain skills you can use. Economics is different than business. Do you want to be an economist or a businessperson?
You should consult with a career counselor before making a commitment..

This question is extremely general and it's difficult to answer.
Consulting is broad too ... basically, getting paid to give advice right? Well, there are so many types of consulting. I'm studying econ and business, but I plan on financial consulting and then running my own businesses down the line.
It really depends on what you want to do. You need to specialize. California has a lot of opportunities, but just because you come to school in Cali doesn't mean immediate success. No matter where you go, you just must do well at whatever you decide to do. Success is when hard work meets opportunity. Cali is great though and there are lots of opportunities ... it's a great place to live.
UCLA, USC, and UC Berkeley all have respectable business schools. I believe the Haas school of business at Berkeley is ranked usually around 10th or so, which is great for a public university. But once again, you have to think about what really makes a school worth going to. Name alone is not the answer.
The best thing you can do is sit down with someone who can help plan a strategy for you and then you must carry out the things you need to do and do them well. With an econ education, you're studying more towards the financial industry than business obviously. Business is WIDE open and you can just about do anything you want with it. Or, you can even combine both and take it somewhere else. Also, just because you studied something in college doesn't mean you have to do something that entirely relates to what you studied. In the end, you have to make your own choice.
Good luck!

I agree with Raptor; if you plan on a graduate degree in business (e.g. MBA) the school that you attend matters a lot. Go to the highest-rated business school you are accepted into; sounds shallow but thats what I found when I went through the MBA hoops. Going to a top-20 business school gives you a chance to double your starting salary.
Of course, if $$$ doesn't matter to you go to the school with the prettiest girls!!

RedMenance what school did you go to and get your MBA, at ASU one of the requirements for it is you have to work in your field for atleast 2 years. With an MBA from ASU usually will get you 80-120K per year.
When I was referring to consulting, I want a school where a lot of companies recruit for graduates in the Business and Econ.
