I love reading what people write. Some are pretty good and some sound like they are retards. You can always tell when an old person is writing in, because they use phrases that have not been used in the last 50 years.

Todays favorites.....

"loose the doves"
"lollygagging"

Then you look at their name and it is a name you only associate with really old people "Virginia", "Elsie", "Edna", "Wilmer"

(no offense to any S2000 owners named Wilmer, Virgina, Edna or Eslie)

Do you have something against older people? The youth can learn a lot from older people no matter what words of phrases they use. In fact, they have a much better understanding of the English language, in general, than today's youth. Some of the things that come out of the mouths of some youger people makes me cringe.

Unfortunately most old people are so far out of touch with reality and they way things are that it really make me sad for them, atleast the ones that I have contact with.

and dario how many of these youth's do you ever see reading anything, let alone a newspaper? the reason they have no grasp of 'proper' english is because they never have to use it. With all these message boards and Instant messanger and such where they only use slang and abreviations they have no need or drive to want to communicate in a way that has been done in the past. They seem to get the point across to each other, and isn't that what counts?

I was never bothered with the language in the letters to the editor, but rather with the poor grasp of reality most of the writers have.

Yes, I read the letters to the editor in the 2 newspapers I get and in the local rag. It's really interesting to me since the papers have very different readers. I read the LA Times and the Antelope Valley Press. In general, the AV Press letter writers are conservatives and the LA Times writers are liberals. What's more, I can read an article covering the same event in each paper and get contradicting info. I always wonder which one is right.

I read the letters to the editor page daily. I generally find it to be highly amusing.

Liberals and conservatives who blindly follow party lines attacking each other incessantly.

Regarding age - newspaper readers/subscribers tend to skew much older than other media demographics.

The best letters are the ones that are complaining about how the newspaper could print such a stupid letter to the editor from someone else.

I assume this is aimed at me since you quoted my post nearly verbatim. I never singled out the elderly in my post, and would never do so. The poor grasp of reality seems to afflict 90% of the letter writers in the local papers, regardless of age, background, etc. A lot of it is, as lig said, people writing party-line mantra regardless of whether it pertains to the specific issue, and a lot of it is dogma. Many of the letters are based on opinion but claim to be fact-based, others are based on "facts" that weren't researched, others are just written by sheep who are following the shepard. The other 10% are well-written, well thought out, and well articulated letters that actually add something to the discussion. I could give examples of all these, but suffice it to say, I find my eyes firmly lodged in the rolled position after I get done reading the letters to the editor section.
