From their website:
Important Safety Information

Some people have had changes in behavior, hostility, agitation, depressed mood, suicidal thoughts or actions while using CHANTIX to help them quit smoking. Some people had these symptoms when they began taking CHANTIX, and others developed them after several weeks of treatment or after stopping CHANTIX. If you, your family, or caregiver notice agitation, hostility, depression, or changes in behavior, thinking, or mood that are not typical for you, or you develop suicidal thoughts or actions, anxiety, panic, aggression, anger, mania, abnormal sensations, hallucinations, paranoia, or confusion, stop taking CHANTIX and call your doctor right away. Also tell your doctor about any history of depression or other mental health problems before taking CHANTIX, as these symptoms may worsen while taking CHANTIX.
After reading that, I'm thinking smoking is a lot safer and reasonable than a Chantix/Champix habit

I'd seriously consider alternatives like Zyban or nicotine gum or patches. When I used Zyban, nicotine ceased to be relevant. I could carry a pack a cigarettes around and not smoke. After a few months, "quitting smoking" was irrelevant. I wasn't a smoker.

Nothing works for everyone, and I think most people quit for several years, start again, quit again, etc. Nicotine is highly addictive and the health effects are subtle to the user. Nicotine is also highly pleasurable. Don't beat yourself up if this doesn't work the first time.

Good luck

Damn - OP, haven't you heard that no one likes a quitter?

I smoked for twenty years, and quit ten years ago last month.

Here's how I did it - nicotine patches.

I didn't follow the instructions, though. I wore the heavy patch for over three months, and it put enough nicotine in my system that I felt like I had constantly "just finished" a smoke. Wore them while sleeping, too, so I didn't wake up to any cravings. Eventually I wound down to the tiny patches, and when I'd forgotten to put one on for a few days in a row, I knew I was done. I'd won!

Also, I cleaned my apartment from top to bottom, got rid of everything that even remotely reminded me of smoking, too. I did go out drinking within 5 days of quitting, and even with people around me smoking, I didn't get the urge to bum one and fire it up.

Go to the dentist and get a cleaning while you're at it. Good luck to you, dude.

My next quit's going to be when I fly to the far east for a couple of weeks. Nothing like a completely alien environment to help you forget you smoke.

Good luck Mikey, you'll be better off.

Just really...realllllly want to quit. If you're wishy washy, you might as well spend the Chantix money on smokes.
You'll probably never be *totally* ready to quit, but it sounds like it's almost that time.

The only person I know who used Champix wasn't really committed to start with and, not surprisingly, wasn't successful.
I'm on round 3 of not smoking and opted for Zyban, which had some unpleasant side effects (really graphic, sometimes violent dreams and there was several days where I felt *completely* apathetic), but it did what it was supposed to: completely took away the physical cravings. That gave me time to create new habits that didn't involve smoking. There are still plenty of days when I crave, but they pass a lot quicker. My advice for you is to have a plan - be really aware of when you smoke and why. Make a list of things to do instead of smoking. So if you smoke more when you're stressed, find healthy replacements for that. Good luck!

Instead of smoking, FAP*. It'll help you keep from smoking and you'll be a happier person.

*note, please FAP in a private area. Exposing yourself to others when fapping may be detrimental to your legal health. Please consult a doctor before beginning a FAPping regimen as unexpected rises in your penis may result. Go to a brothel if you experience an erection of 2 hours or more and your girlfriend is not available. Potential side affects are blindness and hair on palms.

I'm taking the Champix (Chantix) now and it's doing a pretty good job! I'm only on day 3 which is the last of the days with only a .5mg dosage, tomorrow and for the next 4 days I'll be doubling that, and next week it'll be even higher.

Every time I smoke now I feel sick.

This morning I woke up feeling like I have a heavy hangover. I'm dizzy, disoriented, and pretty damn nauseous. But hey, I don't feel like smoking.

On the plus side, I haven't had any suicidal anxious thoughts.

Good on ya Mike! I opted to suck up the unpleasant side effects of Zyban because I just couldn't quit on my own. I did find that the meds did help me get into alternative habits. But if the side effects are interfering on an ongoing basis, maybe talk to your doc. S/he might be able to change the dosage, although I'm not sure how much longer you'll be on it.
Next Friday will be my 10 month anniversary of quitting. I still have days when smelling a cigarette seems like the most awesome thing in the world, but fortunately my attention span has been so short lately that I usually forget about it pretty quickly.

Good luck!
