I've never used usenet.com but looks like it's just a Web interface to the usenet usegroups. Are you familiar with newsgroups at all? If not, think of them as the predecessors to Internet forums. You still need to go to the correct newsgroup to get what you want.

Have you checked out their instructions yet?

http://www.usenet.com/webgateway_inst.htm

http://www.usenet.com/software.cfm

The first link has pretty good instructions on how to read newsgroups. Basically, go to the correct group, and either songs will be posted or you can post a message requesting a song.

Btw, you can access the usenet newgroups through a number of newsreaders. I'm not sure what extras usenet.com offers but it's not necessary to access the groups.

Good luck.

ck your internet porvidor for free access, comcast allows some amount per month free.

the usenet stuff is out there but must be captured and retained. this looking for a usenet situation, quality depends on retained days of data and speed.

to do a search you need software to search for mp3 binaries in the mess and configure them into a continous stream. ook to twocows.com for something free

I have one on News Demon, they give you News Rover for free. You need news rover or another newsreader program.
Install teh reader. Set it up how usenet.com tells you (you pass and your account numbers) and get searching.

You can either search threaded groups (like alt.binaries.talk.harrypotter, or alt.binaries.erotica.movies) or files (like .mp3, .zip, .jpeg) There are many groups and many more messages. The messages contain the files.

searchign for .mp3 files (or news rover has a mp3 search) is the easiest. Going to (not positive of location) alt.binaries.music.mp3 will give you a list of messages that contain files. For mp3s there is really no reason to do this, it just takes long. For movies its nice because you can see things that you might not have thought of.

Most movies are broken up into parts. Depending on the compression and the uploaders choice in .rar program (or par or zip) it could be anywhere from 175-400 messages that make up that one file. You have to download them all and then use winrar to patch them together. .par is a bit harder to do but you really have to just play around with it to figure that out.

Search google for information on News Rover you are probably given that program to download.

Best part of UseNet and why I pay... speed. I downloaded a 1.13gb file in 40mins. You can do that on Bittorrent but not commonly.

Google has taken over the archiving of the usenet postings. It used to be archived by dejanews.com, but Google bought them out and now they own the usenet archives. You can search the usenet on Google by going to http://groups.google.com.

To all those that get happy from that last post... you can search UseNet but not download anything.

You need an account to Download.

This is nice to look through to see if you want to get an account.

I'd agree but its not like it is going to be stopped.

The RIAA and MPAA know about it, but its not popular so they won't do anything about it. That, and the fact that the servers refuse to give out user names and information.

There is kiddy $$$$$$ on there (no I did not look, I just know) and that stuff doesn't get booted. Things stay on there for 30 days, so its a cycle of cleaning itself that makes the providers happy. The users are happy with the download speeds and the wealth of content.

They say they will ban you and report you if they find out you are uploading illegal content. I don't think they mean mp3s or movies, they mean plans to blow up the US embassey in foreign lands. Even then, most of the servers are not in this county so they can tell the US government and the lawyers representing the XXAA to **** off.

When it does get popular (which isn't soon, its too hard for napster kiddies) they will try and stop it but they will not suceed.
