Just watch the Matrix again. Then you will make your final decision on wether we want AI or not.

I, for one, have no idea. That's why I put "true" in quotation marks.

When I worked in the defense industry, we used an AI applciation to help us in our tracking of targets for a missile. You'd be surprised at how advanced things have gotten.

There is a big difference between so called "Expert Systems" and true AI.

The AI holy grail is for a system to pass the Turing Test. So far I do not believe anything has come close.

The Turing Test is a measure of intelligence put forth by Alan Turing... Something to the effect of a game which might be called the "imitation game." There are 2 people and the test AI. One person (A) and the AI (B) are seperated from the 3rd person, who is the interrogator

The Turing Test is obviously the holy grail for natural language processing AI -- but there are lots of varieties of AI that don't directly communicate with a human (at least not in natural language). The Turing Test is just a first stab at defining intelligence, kind of like defining life as anything that reproduces. The definition goes a long way, but isn't complete.

Regarding the Turing Test:

What if AI (B) AND the interrogator are both "learnng" AI's? Would the test of fooling the interrogator still hold true?

Things that make you go "hmmmm"?

Tedow, I think that is what Warren was getting at. The Turing test is a test for a machine's ability to be human-like, but is not the only test able to prove intelligence.
