When I was sixteen I actually had to go to court for throwing a tire iron out my window at someone. He had thrown a cigarette but out and hit the hood of my truck so I got in front of him and tossed it, direct hit right on his hood. He got my license plate number and took me to court over it. I got off free of charge.

slbutler,

The smoking in cars and throwing out ashes and butts onto the road is a pet peevve of mine. I hate when people are smoking and use the roads as their own personal ash tray.

This is relevant to stuff from earlier in the thread and may be a bit late, but...

I'm a former smoker, and quit 2 years ago. When I smoked, I NEVER threw cigarette butts out the window or on the ground, and ALWAYS deposited them in an ashtray or trash can. As others have said, there's rude smokers and there's polite smokers...when you get right down to it, smokers are the same as everyone else, except they smoke!

I don't think people ought to be tossing cigarette butts out the car window - but then again, I don't think folks should be tossing anything out the car window, period. That much I can agree with, and it looks like everyone else can too.

However, I don't understand the argument that if an individual doesn't smoke, others should stop so that they don't have to breath any second-hand smoke. By that logic, let's say I don't drive a car. Then why should I have to breath in the pollution created by drivers? Point being, the world belongs to everyone, smokers and non-smokers alike.

Btw I'm sure smoking is considered a stupid habit by many people. Of course, some would say the same about driving a 2-seater convertible in a world full of SUVs, big rigs, and drunk drivers. Some would say the same about riding motorcycles. It's just perspective, guys. If we did away with all potentially stupid things, then no one would be doing a hell of a lot.

You not the only one to do this. I was called in to emergently take a guy to the OR He had a tire iron shoved up his a$$ and it tore a hole in his sigmoid colon. Having a colostomy (basically wearing a plastic bag full of crap) is a LARGE price to pay to make a point. Now, did this really happen...no, but I have had to do this for "foreign bodies" shoved in the rectum during street brawls that broke out over stupider things. Just something to think about.

Seems to be a hot topic, so I'm going to stay out of the arguements. But I will say this; it's a pleasure working in CA. I have to eat basically every meal at a restaurant or hotel (job is all travel), I love going in and not having to specify non-smoking, or worse, going in at peak hours and having "first available" pop up in the middle of the smoking section.

Florida just passed a similar bill in the November elections, and I can't wait until it goes into effect.

Lastly, I wish more companies would prohibit smoking at their main entrance. What a pain in the butt. At Farmers Insurance in OK City, I was dodging through an omnipresent crowd and cloud, holding my breath every time I walked into the building. Two big, industrial-size ashtrays, and more than 200 butts scattered all over the ground... WTH, they can't walk five feet and drop their butt in there? Nasty.

I think many non-smokers are like me, walking thru a crowd like that, I can smell smoke on my clothes for at least an hour.

I wonder if Sam's or Costco carries tire irons in bulk? I think this sounds like a great idea...

What a coincidence! I just did a tobacco education presentation at our local middle school today. Yes, our local middle school, The tobacco companies have long targeted our children to replace the dying older crowd, and it is amazing how many 11-13 year olds are hooked on tobacco products.

As a medical professional I have seen the effects tobacco has on the body. I have also seen the effects of tobacco on the newborn. Try soothing an agitated, crying newborn going through withdrawl from tobacco, and the mother who cannot understand why her child won't stop screaming.

Yes, smokers have a right to smoke. But they do not have the right to infringe upon others.

I have the right to breathe clean air.

I have the right to be free of second hand smoke and the health hazards it creates.

In addition, I have a responsibility to EDUCATE all my patients regarding the risks of using tobacco.

Please remember one thing:

Smokers are not bad people, the product is what is bad.

My father has tried unsuccessfully to quit smoking his entire life. The tobacco companies have won, they have bought many lives, haven't they? Let's not let them buy any more.

THESE LUNGS ARE NOT FOR SALE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
