ATTN: Smokers, Don't be a jackass!
I have nothing against the people that are smokers, it's just that I am allergic to tobacco smoke. It causes my throat to seize. So while I have nothing against the person, it's the habit I have a problem with. I mean, come on... if you're gonna smoke, at least do so with some consideration. Throwing a butt out the window of a moving vehicle is dangerous, and if you're gonna smoke, please do so in a well ventilated area (preferrably outside).
One niggle I do have to pick is when smokers who are smoking around one of those "please place your butts in here" bins toss their cigarettes on the ground
Yes, I am against smoking, but I am not against the people that do it

Ahhh but the key isn't it?
Far too many people look down on the person and not the habit. Smokers know the look they get when they light up, even if they are in the middle of 500 square mile field.
I wish I never started smoking..but too late for that. Aside from that, I enjoy it. Right off that bat, that tells me I don't at this time have it in me to quit.
When the time comes for me to have kids, I will then do my best to quit. But untill then, I will continue.
I try to be respectful of others that do not smoke.
But...I'm typing now, might as well tell it like it is. I throw my butts out the window. My only deviance from this is when a convertable or motorcycle is behind me, in which case I change lanes and then chuck it.
this is the 5th--6th thread I can recall about this topic..yet I can't recall any thread about how trucks don't have proper mudflaps, or how a scrap truck was dropping metal off the back, in one such instance almost killing my Dad as it pierced the windshield.
Needless to say, its not hard for me to imagine why some smokers do what they do, when they are constantly judged on thier charater, morals, responsibilites, rudeness etc.
And Tim..I'm glad you got it
Most smokers know what their doing is bad for themselves. I can't count how many times I've heard someone say "I've gotta quit" But the fact is that it's one of the most addicting drugs. Once your hooked, It's extremely difficult to quit. It's like saying to an obese person "Just stop eating" or to a depressed person, "Just think happy thoughts" It's not that easy. Some people eat when their stressed/depressed, some people smoke.
Back to the subject at hand. The reason that smokers throw the butt out the window is because if you leave it in an ashtray it'll stink up the car. Whether your a smoker or not, there's nothing worse than old smelly/stale cig buts in a car.
just my $.02

I knew exactly what Mindcore was trying to say in his first post but there is very little about smoking that I find funny.
I read Sondra's story of her mother and yours of your uncle and I wonder why this should have happened. I, myself, spent almost 30 years addicted to cigarettes, from the time I was 13 I smoked almost 2 packs a day. Don't ask me why, I don't know except that I found it impossible to break the habit. I tried many, many times. Fortunately, one day five years ago I woke up and asked myself why am I doing this. That and the "Patch" gave me the strength to quit. I will tell you that when the tobacco companies say that cigarette smoking is not addictive that is pure nonsense.
Surely, Sondra's mom, your uncle, myself and the thousands of others who struggle with tobacco every day are not so foolish as to think we are immune. We just can't find the strength to quit. I was lucky, I was able to stop. I hope that the harm that I did is reversed, but we shall see. Others are not so lucky, unfortunately.
I admire the fact that you are not angry. I admire the fact that you can laugh at Mindcore's comments. For me, I am angry. Angry that I fooled myself for all of those years. Angry that I was manipulated by the tobacco companies and by myself. Angry that I fell into a trap as a stupid teenager that took me 30 years to crawl out of.
As far as consideration goes, I agree with you. It's not only the lit cigarette thrown out of a car window that is wrong, it is also the McDonalds wrapper. Both are wrong. Consideration is consideration no matter what is thrown. I for one don't think that smokers are more inconsiderate then any other people, but surely they are not more considerate either.
