It's not just about the equipment, it's about the room too. Just thought I would grab some quick pictures on my cell phone this morning. This is my lab's Anechoic Chamber, Reverb Chamber and the associated rack system for the Anechoic.
I went to a listening event for, I think Bob Greene's Room Tunes, and the way the room was set up you had a very small sweet spot. If you slouched you lost it and if you stood up it was gone, and forget any side to side movement. The room in the shop was extremely live, and made listening very fatiguing, and on top of that the speakers were very bright, my friend and I went home very disappointed and quite literally worn out. Yet there were people in there saying how good it sounded.
I use a tweaking CD (Chesky) for setting up my speakers, I just moved everything into that position in the picture and I need to move the speakers around yet, to get the imaging just right for my seat, but acceptable through out most of the seating area.

most of this stuff I picked up when I was in high school around 97-98, the TV and receiver have been replaced though. I'll get the specs tomorrow.

I made the transition from 2 channel stereo to surround sound formats kicking and screaming, but it did provide an excuse to upgrade some equipment

I'm at that stage in life where, now that I have the money to afford a really good system, I don't have the desire to get smart on equipment again or the time to sit down and listen to music.
So I have a nice system, not esoteric, but nice. Denon turntable with (I believe) Ortofon cartridge, Sony ES CD changer and recorder, Nakamichi LX-5 3-head cassette tape recorder, Yamaha top of the line receiver (115 w/c into 8 ohms) from about 15 years ago that I use to power my subwoofer. I use an outboard Sony ES amplifier (115 w/c) to power my main speakers. My speakers are Ohm Walsh II's (vintage 1984). They have a very smooth sound and a sweet spot a mile-wide, but since they are pre-CD, they are not very efficient.
I mainly listen to classical music, blues, world music, classic rock, or jazz when I get the chance to sit down and listen to music. It seems that every time I sit down and listen to music and get it to the level where I am really enjoying it, my wife comes in and asks me to turn it down. Then she starts asking if I have fixed something around the house that has been needing repairs for awhile.
