BBB useless?
Hey all,
I've been having some billing issues with a internet server company in the last 6 months or so where they've been wrongfully billing my credit card. I've tried to make contact with this company numerous times and they initially agreed to refund that amount to me, but never seemed to get around to doing it. Now they won't even respond to my emails or return my calls.
I reported this incident to the BBB about a month ago and this is what they sent back to me today:
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has made attempts to contact the
business regarding the above referenced complaint. We regret to inform
you that we have not received a response from the company. Your
complaint is against a company that is not a member of the BBB, and
therefore has not agreed to work with the Bureau in order to resolve
complaints.
This complaint case has now been closed as an
UNANSWERED complaint in their file.
The BBB develops and maintains
Reliability Reports on companies across the United States and Canada.
This information is available to the public and is frequently used by
potential customers. In the case of your complaint, the company's
failure to promptly give attention to the matter will be reflected in
the report we give to consumers about them.
I thought the BBB would have been a bit more useful than that... Can anyone advise me on what else I should do?
Thanks in advance.

BBB uses extortion tactics on small businesses, at least that was my impression of them. When they called me and asked me to join they said that people calling could only get bad reports about me as a non-member but they wouldn't tell them any good stuff if I wasn't a member. So I don't take anything they say with any seriousness, if those are the kind of tactics they use to get people to join. Your best bet is to look into trade organizations that they may belong to.
The BBB has no actual power.
A lot of people just assume they'll jump in and fix their problems, but this really is not the case.
All they do is try to facilitate a resolution between the consumer and the vendor, but as far as "power," they have none.
If your credit card is being charged for something you didn't authorize, all you need to do is call the CC company and they'll reverse the charges.

The BBB serves a consumer not so much the business by providing information about a business PRIOR to doing business with them.
Filing a complaint serves as a warning to others not to do business with this place. You should alway file, it hurts them on occasion, people rarely are smart enough to investigate first but those that do look for business elsewhere. Most people aren't willing to file a complaint so when you see one you know to be wary if you see several RUN! Businesses know that it can cause a loss so they try to clean up any complaints ASAP and they worry about it because regardless of how they handled the situation it stays on there record I think for 6 months.
