Default Beer anyone?

I was just wondering how many of you brew your own beer? I just bottled my first batch and it will be another 2-3 weeks before the carbonation stage will be complete. I have a friend from work who has been brewing for 7 years and his experience really helps.

My first batch is a German Ale. Anyone have any favorite recipies?

I use to brew a lot - seemed cheaper, and you can vary the amount of alcohol in it. MAKE SURE everything is very sterile during the secondary fermentation, or you end up making a lot of lawn fertilizer (it really is good for the lawn if not for drinking). I loved adding rasp berries, cranberries, other weird stuff to make it more interesting. Double stouts were especially good. Hope all turns out well. If you hear popping sounds in the storage/aging area - look out!

Oh yeah....I was very careful with the sterilization. I'm just so excited. I keep going to the cupboard to look at it even though it really doesn't look that different from day-to-day.

I have brewed about 6 cases, I would imagine...haven't done it in a couple of years, but I may do a holiday brew, but I need to decide soon, those take a while!

I usually did a hefe weissen...worked with varying degrees of success. I had trouble getting just the right amount of sugar for fermentation and not enough sugar yields flat beer and too much sugar yields exploding bottles!

I found that it's better to add the sugar to each bottle than to the wort...that way you are more assured of having equal measures of sugar in each bottle...

And yes, it's very important to sterilze all things that come in contact with the wort...takes lots of washing and is my least favorite part of home brewing...but a necessary step.

It's still fun and I enjoy...I should dust off my stuff and make some more...thanks for the reminder! For tonight, I just cracked a cold Hacker Pschorr...

Some of the worst beers I have ever had have been home-brews. We used to get them out only after we have exhausted the stocks of everything else - including Brisbane Bitter which was recognised as the worst beer in the country

I used to brew my own beer, cider and wine.
I found I was drinking too much so I stopped.

I've talked to many people who say the same thing, but I'm drinking beer whether I make it or not. I'm brewing more for the novelty of it.
