Believe and Achieve
At least I think that's what was on a man's t-shirt I saw when I was Christmas shopping on Sunday. It may have said "Believe to Achieve", or, less likely, "Believe then Achieve".
I hate these stupid platitudes.
What they're suggesting is that anything is possible if you work at it hard enough. That's another way of saying that your future is yours alone to determine, that circumstances and external forces don't matter.
Or, viewed from the other side, if you don't achieve something it's all your own fault.
What garbage!
I'm all for positive thinking and so on, but it's just plain wrong to tell everyone that they can do anything to which they set their mind, and that if they don't succeed at something they're a failure.
Oh, well. Merry Christmas! If you aren't good enough to do something, set your sights a little lower and do something else.

There's a lot of things I wanted to "be" when I was growing up. However, talent, resources, and other elements beyond my control kept me from achieving my dreams. But I don't view it as failure, and I don't believe I didn't try hard enough. No matter how much you want something sometimes, it just isn't going to work out. I believe the Rolling Stones said it best, "you can't always get what you want."
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas!
